How to clean your stainless steel windows
I'm often asked the best way to clean windows - and there are really no hard and fast rules because everyone has their own ways, from traditional to jet washing, to paying a local window cream cleaner ( The latter is my preferred method!). So, without further ado, here is what I know about window cleaning (and I'd love to hear from you):
Washing out windows
1. Fill a bucket with warm water and then apply a small amount of mild
detergent such as
2. Wash the liquid once filled. Stir slowly to avoid making too much suede.
3. Use a sponge to scrub windows.
4. Wipe the soup with a rubber peel. The best technique to use is to cross
once horizontally, then work your way down the window, with the squeegee at a
slight angle.
5. Finish the glass by buffing the window with a lint-free cloth or chamois
leather to dry and shine.
Bird Poo on Windows
We love birds but not so much when they use our windows for target practice!
That's the decent thing to do, and it should end there.
1. First of all, never rub bird droppings as they may contain grit which may
scratch your glass. Instead, soften it by holding a damp sponge with detergent
for a few seconds.
2. Rinse loose bits by squeezing a sponge over an area or a hose. Then soak
and rinse again until it is done.
3. If it is cooked in the sun, moisten and use a special glass scraper to
remove any last bit - like this.
Stickers on Windows
We always remove construction stickers before leaving - but if you have
points left or your kids are creative, follow these simple steps for a gun-free
window pane!
1. Remove as many stickers as you can using your fingers.
2. Then use a high alcohol content such as surgical spirit, alcohol rubbing
or even a cloth soaked in vodka to break up the glue.
3. Scrape the glue gently with a special glass scraper, as described above
and repeat until you remove the glue.
4. Finally, wipe the area with an alcohol cloth to remove all traces and
stains with a lint-free cloth or chamois leather.
Clean window sills
If there is only general dirt on the outside of your window, you can use
another bucket of warm soapy water and a soft cloth to clean them. Please do
not use anything like cream bathroom cleaner or hard bristle brush as it may
damage the UPVC seals or peel off the wood paint.
Mold window sills.
Occasionally window seals can be covered with black mold. In this case, you
need to kill the seeds that caused it.
1. Use a very dilute chlorine bleach solution and a very soft toothbrush
(such as a child's) to remove mold.
2. Leave for a few minutes before rinsing and rinsing with clean water
(please do this in a ventilated area and never near open water or a pond).
Inside Windows
We use alcohol wipes when we finish our jobs to clean the windows shiny -
If you would like to purchase something, please visit our showroom at Moss
Lane in Altrincham. We have a million and one great product here - but here are
some of our favorite ways to make your mirror shine!
1. White vinegar - Mix 50/50 solution in a spray bottle (maybe you can
recycle one? Then just spray it on your window and rub with lint free cloth or
chamois).
2. Windoline Cream - Now an old favorite that is hard to come by nowadays,
but you can't beat it! Just wipe a glass before drying your glass with a soft
cloth - and voila! It takes a long time for a bottle to last a lifetime -
